Differences Between Gas Furnace And Oil Furnace

When the temperature dips outside homeowners become desperate to find out cost effective ways to keep themselves warm and comfortable. As people have to choose between different sources of heating, the debate inevitably centers on the efficacy of oil or natural gas furnaces. Some are of the opinion that gas furnaces are better while others feel that oil furnaces have more advantages. However, in order to understand the superiority of one over the other it is important that we make a comparative study of both these appliances and also point out the major differences between them.

Here it needs to be mentioned that a furnace lasts for around 20 to 30 years so it is very important to make the right choice when it comes to buying a furnace. In fact, before buying a furnace for the purpose of heating a home it is better to study the features of both these appliances instead of just finding out their pros and cons.

Let us thus have a look at the prominent features of both these appliances.

First of all, oil furnaces run on oil which is similar to diesel and this oil is supplied to users which in turn is stored in an above the ground storage tank. On the contrary, gas furnaces operate with natural gas and the source remains the local gas companies of a region.

Fuel efficiency of a furnace is measured by AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) and higher the rating more efficient is the appliance. As per measurement records, the AFUE rating of gas furnace is something between 89 and 98 percent while in case of oil furnace the efficiency is something between 80 and 90 percent. Hence, it is clear that gas furnaces are more efficient than that of oil furnaces.

It is true that gas furnaces are more efficient than that of oil furnaces but in terms of the cost, gas furnaces are considerably more expensive than their oil counterparts. However, at the same time, when it comes to fuel cost, oil seems to be costlier than that of gas.

Oil furnaces are known to provide more heating output than their natural gas counterpart. This means with oil furnace you will be able to get more warmth with the same amount of fuel burned as that of the gas furnace.

As far as the availability is concerned, oil furnaces stand a better chance because the oil gets delivered to your homes and it can be stored at homes. But this does not hold true for natural gas furnace. You can opt for a gas furnace only if there is adequate availability of natural gas in your region.

On the other hand gas furnaces are quieter and cleaner than oil furnaces and most importantly maintenance in case of oil furnace is more extensive because the soot and the debris needs to be cleared off and in case of gas furnace too much maintenance is not required as the fuel burns clearly.

Last but not the least, irrespective of the furnace you choose you should get estimation from various HVAC contractors so that you can get the best deal.
